Digital Communications 11

 
Course Outline:

 

This online course is designed to meet the learning outcomes of Digital Communications 11 – a BC Ministry authorized course. 

 

Digital Communications 11 will focus on the use of technology as a means of assisting students with self-reflection of Core Competencies using a digital portfolio platform. This will be used to demonstrate their growth in the core competencies areas.

 

Specifically, students in Digital Communications 11 will learn, archive, and self-reflect on Core Competencies using a digital portfolio platform while in High School.

 

Additionally, students will be provided with opportunities to learn relevant and applicable elements in the area of digital communications. These will help provide students in gaining some familiarity and digital proficiency appropriate for their age and experience. Examples of the types of topics students will have access to include:

 

DIGITAL COMMUNICATION (tone and voice in writing an email to an employer, how word choice impacts a message, clarity and prioritization of ideas, how to ask meaningful questions in an email)

 

DIGITAL LITERACY (how to use various types of computer applications (pdfs, spreadsheets, word processors, apps), identify and correct where usual difficulties occur in using certain applications, how to use the web to help fix something or solve a problem, online critical thinker skills, searching techniques)


DIGITAL RESPONSIBILITY (plagiarism, Chat GPT and AI, digital citizenship, creating a professional online profile, social media, protecting privacy, managing online identity, technology and mental health)

 

Course Topics Include:

  • Digital Portfolio tools to archive and communicate self-reflections on Core Competencies
  • Exploring digital communications that can support collaboration and creativity
  • Exploring digital literacy applications and Self-reflecting on technology and wellness in relation to digital communication tools
  • Creating a personalized digital portfolio (Gr.12 Capstone)

 

Grading:

  • Substantive Assignment – 5%
  • Learning Reflections – 70%
  • Grade 12 Portfolio/Capstone – 25%

 

Resources: 

All course material will be available online. Students will use a variety of digital tools to complete their work.

 

Student Responsibilities: 

  • To complete all assignments to the best of their ability.
  • To review the feedback given on learning reflections.
  • To maintain regular contact with teachers.
  • To work within mutually agreed upon time frames.
  • To ask for help and clarification from teachers when needed.
 

Keys to Success: 

  1. Set a schedule so that you are working on the course either everyday or every second day. There should be no big gaps, with the hope of catching up. This is VERY important!
  2. Actively work through each lesson, trying examples and reflecting on material.
  3. Use the Learning Guides as your tool for documenting your understanding. Lay it out neatly and well organized.
  4. Make sure you understand any test question you get wrong. If you can’t figure it out – ASK for help!
  5. Be sure to use your Spaces system for regular communication with your instructor.
